BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month
Jeanne Engelking has been a tireless volunteer for six years at White Eagle Elementary School, ever since her son, Owen, started kindergarten. She helps in the classrooms, the LMC and with numerous initiatives, such as Jump Rope for Heart, after school clubs, blood drives and community service programs. She has been the school’s liaison to the Indian Prairie Parents Council and is co-chair of the STEM Enrichment Program.
Working with parent Radhika Satapathy, Jeanne helped develop and implement a PTA-sponsored STEM Enrichment Program, which was the first of its kind at White Eagle. Over the past two years, the hugely successful program has touched the lives of more than 550 students each year. For her dedication and commitment, she is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
“I am shocked and very honored to be named Volunteer of the Month,” Jeanne said. “I volunteer because I want to make a difference in my community and in the lives of the kids in our area.”
She said the STEM Enrichment Program at White Eagle touches many students at the school and gets them thinking about how important Science, Technology, Engineering and Math is to them in whatever career path they may choose.
Jeanne helped bring the program to life from the ground up including pitching the idea to the PTA, school administration and teachers; rallying parental support; securing the funds needed to run the program; recruiting more than 100 volunteers each year; designing content; training facilitators and communicating program information, among many other efforts.
“I just love seeing how excited the kids, teachers and parent volunteers get when doing hands-on work related to STEM,” she said.
Although Jeanne and her family are leaving Naperville for a new adventure in Columbus, Ohio, her legacy of caring and commitment will continue on in the thriving programs she helped to nurture and grow.
“It is important to show our kids that helping out and giving back to a school or community in any way, big or small, can make an impact,” she said.
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204’s students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer's school. To nominate an outstanding volunteer, visit http://www.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx/Volunteer.
