BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month
Janine McDonough has been volunteering at Indian Prairie School District 204 for 16 years beginning at the preschool and continuing on to Waubonsie Valley High School, where she is serving her third year as co-president of the PTSA. She is also in her 10th year as a member of the Indian Prairie Parents Council. At Waubonsie Valley, she has overseen the largest membership increase in recent memory and has worked closely with the Athletic Boosters, holding the inaugural Warriors on the Run 5K in 2013, which has become an annual tradition that kicks off Homecoming week. Because of her dedication and commitment, she is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
“There is a great team of volunteers at Waubonsie Valley who do amazing things. I am just one of many,” Janine said. “I thank BMO Harris for their generosity and for making a difference at Waubonsie Valley.”
Janine started volunteering because she wanted to help in the classroom and have an opportunity to see her children. She found that spending time at school made it easier for her son with autism to transition from home to school. She said her son would not be where he is today without the support the family received from the district.
“I feel it is important to give back and support others in similar situations and to be an advocate for all students,” she said. “There are great things happening at Waubonsie Valley, and I enjoy being part of them. Principal Jason Stipp and Assistant Principal Jason Schmidtgall have created an environment that makes it easy to jump on board and get involved.”
The admiration is mutual. In his nomination letter, Principal Stipp said, “Janine listens, supports and pushes us to do better for our students— because of this, Waubonsie is a better school.”
This year, Janine recruited volunteers to help with the high school’s first Readiness Days, which resulted in 90 percent registration. She also helped to fund a new Principal’s Award that recognizes a senior for being an outstanding Warrior.
“I think it’s important for parents to be involved and to support our community,” she said. “One of my favorite phrases is, ‘to the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you may be the world.’”
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204’s students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer's school. To nominate an outstanding volunteer, visit http://www.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx/Volunteer.
