Young Authors Program

The Young Authors Program encourages students to become involved in the authoring process, using their skills to create an original written work. The work may be an essay, story, or poem, and the work may be one that was created for an assignment as long as it is an original work.

Each school determines how its Young Author program will be conducted. Some buildings expect all students to participate, while at other buildings participation is voluntary. Some schools conduct the program as a competition, using judges to evaluate each work and selecting the winners according to a scoring rubric. Other buildings draw names to select a Young Author representative from each grade and/or from the entire building.

All Young Author participants are recognized at the building level. Some buildings invite Young Author finalists and their parents to a breakfast to recognize the student writers and to hear the exemplary works read aloud.   Almost all schools in Indian Prairie District 204 send a representative to the state Young Authors Conference, which is held in May each year.

Questions about the Young Authors program should be directed to the main office at each school.
