Mathematics
Our mission is to prepare all students to apply mathematics in an ever-changing world through the use of basic skills, reasoning, problem-solving strategies and technological resources. VisionWe envision a mathematically rich environment where students are challenged and equipped with math skills and strategies, empowering them to apply mathematics in all aspects of their lives. Belief StatementThe Indian Prairie School District 204 mathematics program must create opportunities for each student to develop his or her own mathematical power to the fullest. Mathematical power denotes an individual’s ability to creatively explore, reason and analyze as well as use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve a wide range of problems.
An appropriate program actively involves students exploring, investigating, discussing and questioning mathematics. In constructing and modifying ideas, students will integrate existing knowledge through interacting with the physical world, materials, and others. This may be accomplished via discussions, use of manipulative materials, appropriate technology, on-going application of concepts, and utilization of computational skills. An encouraging and supporting environment promoting exploration, understanding, and creativity is essential. Within this environment, instruction needs to be well planned, thoughtful, and sensitive to the needs of students. Implementation of these beliefs in District 204 will ensure an innovative mathematics program that will enable today’s children to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s world. Calculator Belief StatementThe calculator is an essential tool for all students. "Technology should not be used as replacement of basic understandings and intuitions." (NCTM Principles and Standards) Research and experience have clearly demonstrated the potential for calculators to enhance students’ learning in mathematics.
