News From the Nest - August 20
Reported by firstname.lastname@example.org on 8/20/18
Dear Graham Families,
We are looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow, on opening day! We hope that you have enjoyed summertime with your children, and that you are excited about the first day of school!
Please remember to complete and send in the attached departure sheet to your child's teacher so that we have the appropriate and correct information for your child's departure from school each day. Thank you for helping maintain a safe and sound environment for our students through the review of the arrival and dismissal reminders attached. Following drop-off and pick up procedures will help ensure a safe entrance and exit for all Graham students.
School buses use the front driveway for loading and unloading. Cars are not permitted in the front parking lot during arrival and dismissal. For the safety of our students, we ask that parents refrain from bringing dogs onto school property during arrival and dismissal time periods.
The first day of school we will be using the front parking lot to line up classrooms for grades 1-5.
First - Fifth Grade students will line up by class at the front of the building behind their teacher. Teachers will be holding signs with their names.
Kindergarten students and parents will attend brief orientation times with their teacher on August 21st. Kindergarten parents who are attending the first orientation session on the 21st, please plan on entering the building shortly before 9:15AM.
Parents are welcome to mingle and observe as we prepare for students to enter the school on 8/21. We will say the Pledge of Allegiance together, before entering the building. When it is time for students to enter the building we will only be sending students and staff inside as our desire is to get the first day of school underway as quickly as possible. Waves, kisses (for the younger kids of course!) and goodbyes will need to occur while lined up outside. In the event of rain we will have a backup plan that involves students entering the building independently and reporting to classrooms with the assistance of our staff.
Kindergarten students will attend a full day on August 22nd. Staff will be posted throughout the building to assist students to their classroom. Additionally, we will have 5th grade students available who will be able to walk kindergarteners to class, as well.

If your child will be absent or tardy, please contact the 24 Hour Absence Hotline by 9:30AM. Parents should report absences to the attendance line at 630-428-6900, press 3 for attendance. Parents are called if a child does not report to school and is not called in absent.
Late Student Arrival
Students arriving after the tardy bell (9:05) should enter the building through the main entrance and report to the office to receive a pass to class. Students arriving after 9:05AM will be marked tardy. The instructional day begins at 9:05AM. We encourage students to be on time every day.
Other Important Items and Reminders
Please note that safety and security will remain a priority for our students, staff and classrooms. Please remember you must ring the buzzer and identify yourself to gain access to the building when students are present, You then need to proceed to the school office to check in upon arrival and present your Driver’s License or State ID for a security scan. You will then be given a Visitor Badge to wear while you are in the building.
The doors at the back of the building will remain closed and locked at all times. Students may exit those doors at the end of the day, but will use Door #1 or Door #4 if they are a walker or bus rider when they arrive. Students who utilize the Car Rider Line will enter the building using Door # 4. This is the gym door.
All persons are required to make prior arrangements before visiting a teacher and/or classroom. It is most important that the classroom instruction not be interrupted for individual concerns. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with the office staff and we will be able to address your question or concern.
"Forgotten" student items that are brought to school during the course of the day will be placed on the "OOPS" table in the front office lobby. The Office Staff will deliver when able items to the classroom or notify your child's teacher. Lunchroom staff takes lunches to the lunchroom prior to every lunch period.
v Birthday Treats
Due to student food allergies, edible birthday treats are not allowed for student birthdays. Parents interested in recognizing student birthdays are welcome to join the Graham Birthday Book Club. Please note that any birthday activity or contribution is completely optional.
Throughout the course of the school year the office announces student birthdays. Birthday party invitations cannot be distributed at school, unless there is a birthday party invitation for every student in the classroom. This helps to avoid hurt feelings which can result for those children who do not receive an invitation.
Students may not take medication at school without a doctor’s note and the school nurse cannot dispense medication without a doctor’s note. Please contact the school office to receive Medication forms.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
We’re looking forward to a great day tomorrow!
