Suicide Prevention Presentation

Reported by on 11/5/18

Dear Crone, Gregory, and Scullen Families,

During the week of December 3, our 7th and 8th students will have the opportunity to hear from a suicide prevention speaker. John Halligan lost his son Ryan to suicide after Ryan was bullied by peers at the age of 12. Since that tragedy, Mr. Halligan has dedicated his life to speaking to middle and high school students about bullying, kindness, and suicide prevention. His presentation, titled Ryan’s Story, has reached thousands of students and has made a profound impact on them. Mr. Halligan is looking forward to sharing his story with our middle schools on the following dates:

Monday, December 3 - Scullen Middle School

Tuesday, December 4 - Crone Middle School

Wednesday, December 5 - Gregory Middle School

Additionally, Mr. Halligan has developed a parent version of his presentation that will be shared with Crone, Gregory, and Scullen parents on Tuesday, December 4 from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Scullen Middle School cafeteria. This presentation is for parents only. While the student version will only be shared with 7th and 8th graders, we welcome ALL parents to attend on Tuesday evening.

Due to the mature and emotional content of Ryan’s Story, there will be discussions in core classes leading up to the presentation as well as follow-up and opportunity for reflection afterwards. Parents who prefer that their child not attend the presentation, will be able to opt out. Parents who wish to opt out should complete and sign the attached form and return it to the main office no later than Monday, November 26.
