LITERACY

In a small group setting based on ability level, students develop reading and writing skills and have the opportunity to advance through the classes. The courses complement other offerings within College of DuPage.

REACH OUT
These classes complement the Vocational Skills courses. Classes may be taken multiple times as new information is introduced. Reach Out courses are designed for 21 to 40-year-old students, and classes are limited to 12 students.

Survival Reading
The focus of this class is to improve student understanding of numerous types of reading that must be done to live in the modern society. Specifically, students will practice and develop their skills in the areas of reading bills, instruction, maps, schedules, menus, catalogs, and much more.

Money Management

Students gain a basic understanding of ways to manage money, including topics such as cash, ATM’s, credit, and debit cards, shopping, budgeting, pricing, and avoiding debt. A simple budget will be developed by each student which will address basic expenditures, savings, and discretionary spending.

Child Care and Development
This course provides a basic understanding of ways to manage child care and development. Students will discuss the developmental expectations of young babies and children, as well as their physical, intellectual, and emotional needs. In addition, we will address the topics of abuse and explore options for selecting appropriate child care.

VOCATIONAL SKILLS PROGRAM
These developmental-level, non-credit courses are designed to develop life and vocational skills that can lead to competitive, entry-level employment and enhance everyday living skills. Most courses meet for eight weeks, meeting twice each week for two hours. These classes can be repeated up to five times. Classes are held on campus in Glen Ellyn.


Employment Skills II
This course provides an introduction to on-the-job skills. Topics include understanding standards of behavior; communication with employers, co-workers, and public; and time management. Recommended preparation: Employment Skills I.

This course provides an introduction to the computer keyboard and typing skills. Topics include how to touch type alphabetic and special characters.

General Office Skills
This is an introduction to basic office tasks and operations of office machines for adults with cognitive disabilities. Topics include filing, mailing, copying, faxing and time management skills.

Food Service Skills II
This course provides the basic/intermediate skills required for food service occupations. Topics include demonstration and hands-on learning in sanitation, safe food handling, safety issues, food preparation and cooking. Recommended preparation: Food Service Skills I

Hospitality Skills I
This is an introduction to basic skills required for entry-level hospitality and hotel housekeeping occupations. Topics include basic room cleaning, laundry duties, proper trash handling, and cleaning product safety. Personal grooming and social skills are also covered.

Horticulture Skills II
This course focuses on the propagation, growth, and care of various plants in the greenhouse. Learning topics include types of propagation and the caring of plants from propagation to maturity (market ready). Emphasis is placed on spring/summer plants, annuals, perennials, houseplants, native, and vegetables. Students will have the opportunity to select plants to propagate and apply their acquired skills. All projects are taken home.
