Graham Elementary 4th & 5th Grade Chorus
As you know, 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to participate in Chorus, an extracurricular activity at the Elementary Level.
Despite the challenges of Covid-19, Music Teachers in District 204 would still like to offer an opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to connect remotely and make music together this year. This will look a bit differently than Chorus in years past. Due to the pandemic, I am very sad to say, concerts are not possible, at this time. However, I’d like to focus on what Chorus will look like and all of the different enrichment activities in which students will be able to participate. Under the guidance of 204 Music Educators, students throughout the year will participate in developing their individual singing voices through coaching on posture, breathing, reading music, sight reading, practicing solfege, learning warm-ups and canons. Students will possibly have opportunities to hear from professional musicians and/or recording artists, as well as Middle School and High School students and guest Teachers.
I’d like to remind you of the numerous academic and social/emotional benefits of participating in a Musical Ensemble. Students learn key 21st Century skills by joining together in a Musical Ensemble -- critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity are natural outcomes of the study of music. These invaluable skills will serve them well in whatever academic or vocational settings students find themselves in years to come.
Furthermore, in an Ensemble setting, students build relationships with one another and learn to communicate through the music, connecting mind, body, and spirit. Music is an outlet for our feelings and often helps us communicate, through song, what we can not put into words. Although our Chorus sessions will be on Zoom to begin the year, all of these benefits still apply. Now more than ever, students need connection with one another, their Teachers and Mentors in a safe environment.
Please know that due to all of the unknowns this year, I will communicate with you on a regular basis. However, flexibility is key, as we do not know what lies ahead. Therefore, please understand that Chorus will be somewhat fluid this year, especially if the school schedule changes in any way in the months to come. Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Here are the important details:
Chorus will be held on Zoom from 8:15-8:45 AM beginning on Monday, October 26, 2020. For the first rehearsal, students will access this link through their Music Google Classrooms. A code will be shared during the first rehearsal so that the students may sign up for a Chorus Google Classroom.
Please fill out the following form by Wednesday October 21, so I can be prepared for the students.
