Volunteer of the Month: September
Reported by firstname.lastname@example.org on 9/15/16
Matt Jones is a familiar face at May Watts Elementary School where he has been a volunteer for the past eight years. He has helped out with classroom parties and events and currently serving as president of the May Watts PTA. For the past two years, he has organized a movie night that embraces the diversity of the student population and has become a popular event at the school. Because of his dedication and commitment, Matt is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
"I am very honored to be named Volunteer of the Month. I am glad to have the opportunity to represent May Watts in such a positive way," Matt said.
Matt has volunteered at May Watts since his oldest son attended kindergarten. He started out by reading to his children's classes and chaperoning field trips, then joined the PTA as Health and Safety Chair. Eight years later, his oldest child is now a seventh-grader at Hill and three other children are attending May Watts. The former high school teacher and football coach, who is a stay-at-home dad, said he enjoys helping the community and making it a better place.
"I love it when I am volunteering in the library and my daughter's class walks by on their way to lunch and they give me a big smile and wave – that's the best part," he said.
Growing up in southeast Virginia with three brothers, he has fond childhood memories of his hometown and the many people who were volunteers there, like his recreational football coaches, the Scout leaders and the small group of WWII veterans who helped out at his church. In 2001, he married Jaime, a Waubonsie Valley High School grad, and they moved to Naperville to be closer to her family.
Matt says it is critically important that people volunteer in the schools.
"Budgets are stretched so thin and teachers are asked to do more and more," he said. "Get in the building, help the staff and teachers, join your PTA and participate in fundraisers and activities -- all these things help make our children's schools better places and who doesn't want that?"
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204's students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer's school. To nominate an outstanding volunteer, visit http://www.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx/Volunteer.
