Explore 204: Bridge Building

"Physics is everything." — Joe Tarszowicz, student
More than 600 miniature bridges designed and built by physics students were put to the test during a recent contest held in District 204. Students carefully added weights to their wooden bridges to see how much their design could hold before collapsing. The testing of model bridges promotes the principles learned in physics class. It also gives students the opportunity to develop design skills and hands-on mechanical skills through bridge construction.
Students participate annually in this international competition involving schools from around the globe. According to teacher Mike Kennedy, the large number of District 204 students participating in this one day event made it the largest bridge building contest in the world.
