Principal Update March 5, 2017

Reported by lisa_sadler@ipsd.org on 3/5/17

Our teachers had a great day of learning on Friday. We can't wait to try out our new "learnings" on our students. We have a fun filled week ahead at Brookdale and in District 204.

Here is an update from Brookdale:

MULTICULTURAL READING NIGHT ON MARCH 9TH
District 204's second annual Multicultural Reading Night takes place 6:30 to 8:30 pm on March 9 at Still Middle School. The event includes 12 different reading stations (including English, Spanish, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, French, Arabic and Chinese), a welcome bag, raffle tickets, a free book for every school-aged child that attends, coloring station, and refreshments. The event is sponsored by the Bilingual Parent Advisory Council and the Parent Diversity Advisory Council with the goal of promoting diversity and reading within our community.

PREPARING FOR PARCC ASSESSMENT
Our students in third, fourth and fifth grade are taking a practice test in the next week or so in order to become familiar with the structure of the test. For the week a student is taking the PARCC Assessment, we ask they bring in a pair of ear buds or headphones. We have some available for students who don't have their own at school but do not have enough for an entire grade level. We really appreciate your support.

READ AND WRITE GOOGLE TRAINING FOR PARENTS
This school year, Indian Prairie School District #204 purchased Read and Write for Google as a Universal Design for
Learning tool. All students K-12 (including students in the STEPS program) have access to this tool when they sign into Google Chrome with their IPSD Google login. Read and Write for Google is a powerful reading and writing support that many students can benefit from. Some features include: listening to on-screen text aloud, speech recognition, word prediction, and highlighting study tools. If you are interested in learning more, please consider attending an
informational meeting on March 22nd. See the attached flyer for information on times and how to register for this training.

ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL
We encourage ALL of our families to participate in reading our ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL The Tale of Despereaux. This coming week, we should all be reading Chapters 31 to 43. Don't forget to mark your calendar for Wednesday, March 15th for our Family Reading Night and ONE BOOK/ONE SCHOOL celebration. Check out this link for more information.

AUTHOR VISIT WITH TIM GREEN
Brookdale third, fourth and fifth grade students will have an author visit with Tim Green on March 6th. Tim Green is a very NFL player who currently writes very popular stories/books centered around sports. His latest book, Baseball Genius was co-authored with Derek Jeter!! Students can purchase an autographed copy of this book for $16.99. To preorder a book, please complete the attached order form. Find out more here about Tim Green.

PDAC MEETING RECAP & FILM SCREENING REMINDER
On February 23rd, the Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) held a meeting with representatives from various district parent organizations to learn about their role and efforts made to collaborate and share information. Discussion on how we continue to advocate for all students and promote inclusivity were also central topics throughout the meeting. For information about PDAC or PDAC meetings, please visit the PDAC subpage.

The Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) in conjunction with the Metea Valley High School PDAC committee, invite you to attend a FREE screening of the film: Most Likely to Succeed. An acclaimed film offering an inspiring look at what students and teachers are doing in schools. The screening will take place on Friday, March 10th, 6:30 pm, at Metea Valley High School (auditorium). For additional information and to RSVP, please visit THIS LINK.

We are accepting pre-registration forms for Kindergarten next year. Please let neighbors and friends who have not started at Brookdale yet know and pass this information on to them. We need to plan accordingly so we have the right amount of sections (and teachers) for our KDG classrooms.
