Students Teach Teachers

During last Wednesday's before school professional development, students from Mr. Gavras' class shared their Genius Hour projects. Teachers walked around as four groups of students explained their projects. They talked about how they got their ideas, how they executed their projects, problems they had and things they learned. They helped teachers learn additional strategies and ideas that can be incorporated into Genius Hour. It was impressive hearing them explain their projects.
One group of students shared how they used a green screen to create a video about science, another showed the video game they created using the Bloxel app and explained how they went about creating it. This same group also showed the project they were working on about flight and how various alterations to a paper airplane would result in different results. Another group shared their how to video they created on gymnastics. The final group shared a project they were working on to learn how to draw portraits better. They explained how they had first worked with art teacher Angie Bader to learn some basic skills and then how they independently applied what they learned. Their progress was impressive. Students fielded the many questions posed by the teachers and were able to clearly explain the answers.
The students were truly the teachers during this morning. It was exciting to see the progress they made as well as how they got there. There are definitely exciting things happening during Genius Hour!
