Principal Update March 20, 2017

Reported by on 3/20/17

(Sorry for the delay in my Principal Update - I was locked out of the system over the weekend and was unable to get it sent.)

Next week begins our Spring Break. Please know the school office will be closed. We hope everyone enjoys a safe, fun yet relaxing break.

Here is an update from Brookdale:

Our students in third, fourth and fifth grade are taking a practice test in the next week or so in order to become familiar with the structure of the test. For the week a student is taking the PARCC Assessment, we ask they bring in a pair of ear buds or headphones. We have some available for students who don't have their own at school but do not have enough for an entire grade level. We really appreciate your support.

On Tuesday, March 21 at 7:00pm in the Multipurpose Room, the PTA will be holding a general meeting for all Brookdale families. District 204 school board candidates will be in attendance for a short introduction and Q&A following the PTA meeting: Michael Raczak, Laurie Donahue, Vasavi Chakka, Renata Sliva, Susan Taylor-Demming and J. Randy Sidio. There will be a PTA member vote on PTA bylaws amendments and an announcement of the slate of candidates for the 2017-2018 PTA Executive Committee. We hope you can join us for the important meeting.

Tuesday, March 21st is the 12th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day! Each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. We are encouraging all Brookdale students and staff to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and our Brookdale community by wearing Crazy Socks tomorrow. March 21st is designated World Down Syndrome Day because the date - 3-21 - signifies the trisomy of the 21st chromosome.

Due to popular demand, yearbook orders are being accepted through WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22! Yearbooks are $15 each and pridelines are $3 each. Return order form and payment to the school in an envelope labeled "Yearbook" by Wednesday. The order form may be downloaded at

Every Wednesday and Friday (May 4 – May 26) from 8:20am to 9:00am Brookdale Elementary will sponsor arun club. Students will learn about the joy of running, log a mile or two, and burn some energy before heading to class.
To register for the Brookdale Spring Run Club, please register online at
If you have any questions, please contact Jen Birkner at or call (630) 234-4617.

The Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) invite you to their next meeting on Tuesday, March 21st, 7:00-9:00 pm, at Crouse Education Center (CEC), 780 Shoreline Drive. The meeting will focus on Chapter 7 of the Mindset book by Carol Dweck. The topic is: What Makes a Great Parent? Teacher? It is not necessary to have read the chapter or book. For information about PDAC or PDAC meetings, please visit the PDAC subpage.

All elementary and middle school students with multi needs and supported services are invited to attend the District's Special Survivor Games 2017. The FREE event will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Peterson Elementary School in southwest Naperville. This fun event brings together volunteer peer buddies and District 204 elementary and middle school students with special needs to engage in relay style competitive races. See attached flier for details and learn more about the games by reading this article that was featured in last year's Naperville SUN and watch a video created by NCTV-17 from a couple of years ago.
Sign Up Now - Registration is Free! Simply send your child's name, home school, current grade level, special needs, and parent's name/email address/phone number to Feel free to contact me with any questions! Kristen Kucharski (Co-Creator of Naperville Survivor Games) at 630-440-4792.

We are accepting pre-registration forms for Kindergarten next year. Please let neighbors and friends who have not started at Brookdale yet know and pass this information on to them. We need to plan accordingly so we have the right amount of sections (and teachers) for our KDG classrooms.
