Career Day

Reported by julia_alsirt@ipsd.org on 4/6/17

Granger Middle School eighth graders had the opportunity to explore careers just before Spring Break. More than 300 students spent their first hour of Career Day in two sessions listening to professionals they selected. In those sessions they had the opportunity to learn and ask questions firsthand. Twenty different professionals from a variety of fields in and outside of the Granger community shared insights into their careers including the educational path starting in high school. Students listened to professionals representing the fields of Service: Firefighter, Police Officer, Homeland Security, teacher— Technology: Animation and Video Game Production, Math & Science: Engineer, Scientist, Doctors (various fields) Athletic Trainer…just to name a few. The eighth grades then came together to listen to a Keynote speaker: Ta-Tynisa Wilson, a Waubonsie graduate. Young, energetic, and passionate about her career as a Vocalist and Actress, she shared a lot of the same insightful messages as the earlier guests. In addition she shared her path in high school as that student who had no idea of her strengths/interest, as well as her flops, mishaps and awakenings as she took risk and tried activities she would not have normally pursued on her road to discovering her strengths/interests and passion. The common thread in listening to the messages, seemed to be identify your strengths and interest. Discover what you are passionate about and find a way to do what you love as a career rather than what has the biggest salary.
