Granger Students Contribute to Charities

Reported by julia_alsirt@ipsd.org on 4/25/17

March and April have been action packed months for Granger students attempting to raise money, awareness and donations for local charities. Three fundraisers, “Pi’d” in the Face, Play- Doh Collection and Shave a Head for Bike Bald resulted in collecting a total of nearly $1200, over 200 tubs of Play Doh and 750 pounds of non-perishable food items.

“Pi’d” in the Face – In celebration of “Pi Day”, which was March 14th, students bought raffle tickets for a chance to throw a pie in a teacher’s face. Ten Granger teachers (White, Kandl, Jensik, Yadgir, Huetson, Sinding, Sanders, Bauer, Grapenthien and Klaft) and Assistant Principal Tim Lowe graciously took a pie in the face for this event.

Food and Play-Doh Collection - Combining efforts with Granger GrizLeads, students put a spin on their annual food drive for the Aurora Food Pantry. While they maintained the tradition of competing to see which team could bring in the most food items for the pantry, they amped up the competition by having students bring in tubs of Play-Doh. Each tub resulted in a deduction of points from the teams with the highest number of food items collected. Children that have undergone chemotherapy may experience challenges with their motor skills: working with Play Doh can be a helpful aspect of therapy.

Bike Bald - Bike Bald is a local organization that supports children with life-threatening illnesses. The donations they receive allow them to support these kids and their families emotionally, spiritually and financially. Bike Bald was chosen as a recipient of funds raised because they are a local organization, and provide Granger students an opportunity to help other kids! Students purchased raffle tickets for a chance to shave the head of Granger staff members Yadgir, Sadler, and Sanders and Assistant Principal Nick Hurd. Winners of the raffle took center stage as they became barbers for the day on top of “Neptune” a fire truck owned by Bike Bald. The student raffle winners were Lilly Buchta, Teddy Malamis, Siddharth Menon, Jenna Delmar and Adhvaith Mhahesh.
