Allison Bonansinga gives a hoot about Owen Elementary School. As a volunteer for the Library Media Center, she created several owl-related displays, in honor of the school's mascot, designed to teach the students about Internet safety and the seriousness of their digital footprint in the world. She currently serves as secretary of the Owen PTA, chairs the Owen PTA Reflections Art Contest, co-chairs the World Kaleidoscope multicultural event and is the volunteer coordinator for the LMC. Because of her dedication and commitment, Allison is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
"It's an amazing honor," she said. "I'm so grateful to be able to give back to Owen with this award."
Allison began volunteering four years ago when her son, Calvin, began kindergarten.
"I love giving kids new experiences," she said. "One of the most fun and rewarding things I've helped with recently is implementing the Creation Station in the LMC."
Allison helps LMC Director Tina McHale test new technologies such as coding robots, STEM building sets and various crafts, and helps to create easy-to-follow instructions so the students can take full advantage of these activities.
Allison said she loves working one-on-one with the students and with the teachers because it is such a positive environment.
"We have amazing teachers in this District, and their plates are very full," she said. "They are truly appreciative of every little thing a parent does to help out in the classroom or with PTA activities. It's this combination of the teachers' hard work and parent involvement that makes such a rich learning environment for our kids."
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204's students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer's school. To nominate an outstanding volunteer, visit Volunteer of the Month.
