Principal Update April 30, 2017

Reported by on 4/30/17

Our Superintendent, along with 360 other Illinois Superintendents, are working on pressuring the Illinois Assembly and Governor Rauner to pass an Illinois state budget. See the information below for more information.

Here is an update from Brookdale:

Please join us on Tuesday, May 2nd for Walk-in Registration from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Those families that have been verified only need to bring in an updated Health Card and their Fees. If you have not been verified through a new residency process, the letter will indicate what information we need to register your child for the 2017-18 school year. All information can be brought during the Walk-in Registration on Tuesday, May 2nd. Registration paperwork was sent home via backpacks two weeks ago with all Kindergarten through Fourth Grade students— however, if you need additional copies, we will have them on hand at school.

While Illinois public schools have benefited from a partially-funded state budget, our schools, students, families, and communities will continue to suffer without a full state budget. We also will suffer if Mandated Categorical state payments, which support special education, bilingual education, transportation, and other important services, do not get paid this year. To date, the State of Illinois owes our District $15.7 million in those Mandated Categoricals, and there is no state budget on the table for approval. We are calling on members of the Illinois General Assembly and the Governor to do the following:
• Immediately, and with bipartisan support, end the state budget impasse.
• Improve the state’s education funding formula and invest in students and schools, including higher education institutions.
• Pay school districts what they are owed this year.
Please join the effort and:
• Contact your legislator! Click here to find your state legislator.
• Ask your legislator to take action to address the three items mentioned above.
• Use social media to share your budget concerns with the hashtag #PassILBudget.
• Share this information and ask your friends and community members to join our efforts.
Let’s all work together to #PassILBudget and create adequate and equitable funding for our schools.

Every Wednesday and Friday (May 3 – May 26) from 8:20am to 9:00am Brookdale Elementary will sponsor a run club. Students will learn about the joy of running, log a mile or two, and burn some energy before heading to class.
To register for the Brookdale Spring Run Club, please register online at
If you have any questions, please contact Jen Birkner at or call (630) 234-4617.

On Tuesday, April 25th, the Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) hosted a meeting titled:Evolving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset based on chapter 8 of Carol Dweck’s book,Mindset. We actively participated in discussion on grit versus resilience, learned about grit research and took a self-grit assessment. Meeting presentation and grit assessment can be found HERE. For more information, please visit the PDAC subpage.

For students entering 4th, 5th & 6th Grade. Sign up your student to be a part of the District #204 Summer Music Camp! Students will sing, dance and play instruments like xylophones, recorders and drums. On the final day of camp, students will perform music they have experienced throughout the camp for their families. You may pick ANY session that works best for your family and schedule, despite where you live or attend school. Register at: There are three different sessions/times at three different locations. Instructors are: Danielle Donaldson, Shelley May Hutchison and Maureen McCoy. Registration fee for the Music Camp is $69 for the week if you register by May 26th. After May 26th and fee is $74.00.

Attached to this email, you will find a form parent's can fill out to give input on what type of teacher or environment their student requires to learn best. Please know that any form that is returned with a request for a specific teacher will be denied and returned. As we make classroom lists for next school year, we will refer to these input forms and do our best to meet the needs as suggested. Please know that no form will be accepted after June 1, 2017 as the class lists are already being formed by that time.

The Jeanine Nicarioco Memorial Fund for Literacy will host it's annual Run for Reading 5K GLOW Run. The GLOW Run is on Saturday, June 3, 2017 beginning at 8:15pm. This is a fun event where the community and school can come together. We will have a Brookdale team running/walking together! Our school coordinator, Alice Iwinski, designed Brookdale GLOW Run t-shirts we can all wear together. Click here to order a Brookdale T-shirt for under $14.00. Check for more information or to sign up.
