Principal Update September 10, 2017
Reported by email@example.com on 9/10/17
This is a LONG update. We apologize for the length but there is a lot of information to share this week.
Here is what is happening at Brookdale:
BROOKDALE PTA MEETING WITH DR. SULLIVAN - SEPTEMBER 19 AT 7:00PM
Dr. Karen Sullivan, District 204 Superintendent of Schools, will be in attendance at to provide updates on topics affecting District 204 students. Parents may RSVP to attend and submit questions for consideration in Dr. Sullivan's Q&A by September 14 athttps://goo.gl/forms/R8QHD2HVk6g8UpFu2.
PLEASE KEEP DOGS HOME
According to the District's Parent/Student Handbook, we ask that ALL families keep their dogs at home during arrival and dismissal. This is for safety reasons and to respect those individuals who fear dogs. Even the most gentle animal can become aggressive when in an unfamiliar situation or becomes anxious. We appreciate everyone respecting this request.
EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
We are having difficulty with many parents coming or calling at 3:15 or 3:20 or 3:25 for early dismissal. This is the busiest time in our main office and students/staff are wrapping up very important information in the classrooms at this time. These early dismissals are extremely disruptive to our staff and students. Beginning this week, we are asking for parents to send a note with your child in the morning if there is a need for an early dismissal and what time parents will be coming to pick up the child. Teachers do not always have time to check emails once the first bell rings. This will better prepare our staff and students.
However, if sending a note in the morning with your child is not possible, we ask parents/guardians to call the office no later than 3:00pm. That will give us enough time to share this communication with the teacher and avoid any miscommunication. Please understand, for any last minute early dismissal requests, it may take 5-10 minutes for your child to be sent to the office so they can finish up end of day procedures. Our hope is to reduce the need or refrain from calling any students to the office after 3:15pm. Your support and understanding with this procedure is greatly appreciated.
ESL CLASS OFFERED FOR 204 PARENTS
In partnership with College of DuPage, IPSD 204 is offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for 204 parents who have students in the ELL Program. Classes will be held every Monday and Wedneday from September 20th and go through December 6th from 6:00pm to 9:20pm at Waubonsie Valley High School (WVHS). Interested parents need to attend a testing and registration session on either Wednesday, September 13th or Monday, September 18th at WVHS at 6:00pm. Please see the attached flier for more information.
METEA VALLEY CHEERLEADING CLINIC
We are excited to share information about the Metea Valley future Cheerleaders clinic for K - 8th grade. It is a great opportunity for the elementary and middle school aged kids to work with and become familiar with the high school they will attend in the near future. Instruction is tailored to each age group starting from beginning K - 1st grade, all the way up to 7th and 8th grade students who are wanting to try out for the high school team next year or the year after. It is a great opportunity for them to have fun and improve their cheerleading skills. Please see more information in the attached flier.
BUS SAFETY AND REMINDER FROM FIRST STUDENT
First student has received several concerns from their drivers regarding parents driving vehicles past school buses with extended stop arms while unloading or loading at Brookdale. Illinois vehicle code requires all vehicles to honor extended stop arms on school buses during the loading/unloading process regardless of where this is occurring. This is a reminder to all of the Brookdale community of the safety risk of driving past a school bus during the loading/unloading process. In addition, this is against the state law. Your assistance in keeping Brookdale student’s safe is appreciated.
Did you know that Brookdale has 15 students registered to represent our school and Team IPEF in the Naperville Kids Marathon? This unique fitness program encourages students to make healthy choices, learn about goal setting and see how much fun running for a cause can be. Students commit to running 25 miles (one mile at a time) before October 20 and track their miles. They run their final 1.2 miles of their marathon on Saturday, October 21 at Naperville North High School and receive a shirt and finisher medal. It's not too late to register at https://www.ipef204.org/kidsmarathon/ and choose to run for our school. Cost is $44 and includes race registration and a $26 tax-deductible donation - $13 of which is sent directly back to Brookdale! Sign up ends on Friday, September 15th!
The Indian Prairie Educational Foundation (IPEF) is partnering with District 204 to recognize staff who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of students. Nominate a staff member by submitting an essay describing how the staff member has positively impacted students. Student nominations are strongly encouraged. Parents, alumni and community members are also encouraged to submit nominations. All nominations are kept for consideration until the end of the current school year. Nominees must be currently employed by District 204. To nominate a District 204 staff member visit
http://www.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx/APlus. Nominations must be received by September 8 to be considered by the September selection committee.
