Kendall School practices safety drills each year. Students know the drill that rehearses evacuation from the building as the fire drill. We practice this drill several times each year, including once under the supervision of the Naperville Fire Department. We also practice a tornado drill that rehearses taking cover inside the building. We practice tornado drills both in the fall and in the spring. Kendall students and staff members are familiar and highly efficient with both of these drills. We practice all drills with a “zero” level voice.
We also practice a safety drill that keeps students in their own rooms. The day of such a drill will begin with information shared during regular morning announcements. Students will be told that there could be a time when we want students to remain in their classrooms with the door locked. When they practice this “lock down drill”, they will hear me say over the intercom, “Teachers, please take out your lockdown card at this time.” Teachers have cards that give them directions to follow.
Thus far we have practiced a tornado and a fire drill. A lock down drill supervised by the Naperville Police is scheduled for October 24th. As always, we will follow up with staff discussions to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
