PowerTalk for Families:
Well-set goals serve as a compass, keeping adolescents on course toward a healthy future. Adolescents who set and reach personal goals have a stronger sense of self and are more likely to make healthy decisions. Use this month’s PowerTalk for Families to identify a family goal. Involve your whole family by learning steps to take to reach a goal.
Parents of High School Students:
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month. Guest author, David C. Lott, MD, a specialist in addiction psychiatry, wants parents to understand the importance of substance abuse prevention in teens. Dr. Lott points out studies have shown that earlier onset of substance use is associated with worse outcomes in terms of addiction, so preventing a teen’s initial exposure to drugs, even if it is only a temporary delay, can improve the outcome. Understanding the influence of the 3 P’s: parents, peers, and pop culture may serve to help guide teens toward reinforcing healthy behaviors and responsible decisions. Check out this month’s Parents Use Your Power newsletter to find out more.
Parenting Strong Podcast:
Adolescents make healthy choices most of the time regarding addictive substances. While it is not the norm to see a teen engaging in unhealthy behavior, it happens. Do adults say something if they witness an adolescent possibly under the influence? What about if a teen is in emotional distress? And if you hear about an adolescent struggling with something, should you contact his or her parent? A prevention expert answers questions about how to respond if you hear of an adolescent you don’t know who might be involved in or contemplating something troubling or harmful. Listen to this month’s podcast to find the answer to the question: do you help an adolescent you don’t know?
The Power of Choice is a collaborative project led by 360 Youth Services in District 204 and District 203 middle and high schools increasing the number of students making healthy choices regarding substance use.
