What is #FutureReady204?...Community members are invited to attend the next Engage 204 session on January 29 from 7 to 9 pm at Still Middle School, 787 Meadowridge Drive, Aurora. This session will focus on "What is #FutureReady204?" Experts have stated that the majority of students entering elementary school today will be working in jobs that have not been created yet, using tools that have not been invented yet, solving problems that have not been thought of yet. During this interactive session, administrators will share how education is changing to help students develop life and work skills that will be needed in the future. Engage 204 is a collaborative process between the community and District 204. Key to the success of this process is the collaboration and discussion between participants. District residents who attend will have the unique opportunity to share ideas and discuss topics in small groups in order to provide feedback to the Board of Education. Findings and recommendations will be presented to the Board of Education by July 2018. All District 204 residents are invited to participate in Engage 204. RSVP is appreciated, but not required at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Engage204RSVP. For more information, visit http://engage204.org.

Ozzie Reading Club… The Kane County Cougars Ozzie Reading program begins next Monday, January 22 and runs through March 19. It is earlier this year because our game date has been changed from May to April. Students who read 15 minutes daily will receive a free ticket and food voucher to a Kane County Cougars game. Welch's game day this year is April 23 at 6:30pm. Welch's chorus will be singing the National Anthem! The reading verification form can be found here: https://goo.gl/xkMZTB. Parent verification forms can be signed every two weeks and returned to your child's teacher. Please visit https://sites.google.com/a/ipsd.org/welch-library/ for details. Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Domek in the Welch LMC. Happy Reading!—

Battle of the Bluestems… Will you be watching the Battle of the Bluestems this year? If your child is in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade and has read at least 10 Bluestem books this year they can participate on a team at a Welch Battle of the Bluestems. If they have read all 20 books they can be a captain! Teams have a maximum of 3 players. This following form must be filled out and returned by February 27, 2018 to the LMC. Welch Battle of the Bluestems will be held on March 6 from 3:35-4:15. Top two teams will be invited to a district Battle of the Bluestems to be held at Graham Elementary school on March 12 at 5:00pm. Recess Reminder… With the cold temperatures upon us, I wanted to send a reminder regarding recess. A 15 minute recess is held each day following lunch. During the winter, we will go outside for recess if the wind chill index is at 5 degrees or above. The wind chill report will be obtained from the National Weather Service. Students are expected to dress appropriately for winter weather recess with hats, gloves, boots, and winter coats. When we have snow, boots and snow pants are required to venture off of the blacktop and out into the snow. All students participate in recess unless a doctor’s note including a medical reason is provided to the school. When a student is excluded from PE due to a medical concern, the exclusion will apply to all physical activities including recess, unless otherwise noted. The school nurse will follow up with the doctor’s office as needed. Please note that parents may write a note to excuse their student from all physical activities, including recess, for up to three days. If there is an ongoing or recurrent illness or need for exclusion, we will request a doctor’s note regarding the exclusion and the medical reason for the exclusion. Students who are unable to participate in recess will sit inside the lunchroom on the stage stairs reading, and will be supervised by our lunchroom supervisors. Please contact Welch’s main office with any questions. Our students’ safety is our concern.

Making the Right Call When Your Child is Sick… As we are in the midst of cold and flu season, a few reminders:
School Policy requires a child to stay home if he or she:
Has a fever of 100.0 or higher
Has been vomiting or has diarrhea
Has a sore throat with a fever
Has symptoms that keep your child from participating in school, such as:
Very tired or lack of appetite
Cough that he/she cannot control
Headache, body aches , or earache
24 Hour Rule:
FEVER: Keep your child home until his or her FEVER has been gone without fever reducing medicine for 24 hours. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and make others sick.
VOMITING or DIARRHEA: Keep your child home for 24 hours after the LAST time he or she vomited or had diarrhea.
ANTIBIOTICS: Keep your child home for 24 hours after the FIRST dose of antibiotics for anything like an ear infection or strep throat.
Please help others from becoming sick by keeping your child home if he or she is ill. One sick child can spread germs to all his or her classmates. For more information, or if you have questions, please contact the Welch Health Office.

Parent Survey... We Need YOU!! Please take a few moments to complete the State of Illinois Survey on Welch Elementary School. This information will help us make Welch the best it can be. To take this short survey:
1. Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/login/.
2. Type and then select Dupage as District 204's County location. This is the county associated with the district, not the location of an individual school.
3. Type your school's name into the School field and then select your school.
