Middle School Football
Reported by Paulette_Wasielak@ipsd.org on 4/13/18
Dear Middle School Parents,
We are reaching out to let you know about a change in the middle school football program taking place next year. We have experienced a declining enrollment in after-school football for the past several years. In some cases, we do not have enough students to field a team during a game and have been forced to forfeit. We have heard from parents that the potential for injuries, including concussions, has been one reason students haven't participated.
Taking into consideration the declining enrollment and the potential for injuries, beginning next year we are replacing our current program with flag football. We believe this non-contact version of the sport will still provide the opportunities to teach the fundamentals of the sport with minimal risk of injuries, including concussions. We hope this change will provide an increased opportunity for more students to play the game.
Next fall, the program will be open to seventh and eighth graders with no weight classes. District 204's 7 middle schools will compete against each other, with schools having one home game and one away game against each school during the season.
We believe these changes will provide a safer opportunity for an increased number of students to enjoy playing football. Please contact your principal should you have any questions.
