Mrs. Dede Miner, art teacher, and Mrs. Rebecca Stewart, LMC Director, have joined forces to bring art, books, and the LMC together at Brooks Elementary. Mrs. Miner introduces the concept of weaving on a small handmade loom during 4th grade art classes. The students then string their loom and begin weaving an AB pattern. The weaving terms loom, weft and warp are explained and various weaving techniques are demonstrated. Midway through the unit, Mrs. Stewart reads the George Ella Lyon book “Weaving the Rainbow” to the students. She demonstrates the process of producing yarn from fleece, as described in the book. Samples of wool show the steps from the dirty fleece, through picking, carding, dyeing, spinning, and plying to finished product. The students have an opportunity to touch various wool, synthetic and cotton fibers at various stages of the yarn production process. They particularly enjoy watching the carding on a drum carder and spinning with a PVC spinning wheel and seeing the small table loom, which although it is a step up from the cardboard looms they use in art class, utilizes the same warp and weft technique they know. As the unit continues, the students plan their patterns and finish their weavings. The weavings are removed from their looms, tied and ready to take home to enjoy.
