The Helping Hand Program was established in 1967 to provide children with adult assistance during an emergency. As part of the district's safety program, children learn that a home displaying a red Helping Hand poster in a front window is a safe place to go when they are frightened, sick, injured, or lost. Helping Hand households are instructed to contact the police immediately whenever a child needs assistance.
Local unit PTAs recruit volunteers to support the Helping Hand program by distributing applications to parents at all District 204 elementary schools, regardless of municipality. Each completed application is screened by the Naperville Police Department. Upon approval, PTAs distribute a Helping Hand poster to the household.
