Scullen Eclipse Watch Party

Good afternoon, Scullen Families,

We are emailing to inform you about the upcoming solar eclipse, the importance of viewership safety for our students and staff, and the eclipse watching party that we have planned for the shark students and staff.

On April 8, 2024 there will be a solar eclipse visible from our location in the afternoon. This celestial event presents a unique educational opportunity for our students to learn about astronomy and the wonders of the universe. To facilitate this learning experience, we are planning to organize a safe viewing session that includes eclipse safety glasses for all of our students and staff .

On Monday, April 8th, from 2:00 - 2:15 PM, Scullen will be holding an eclipse viewing for all students and staff. The eclipse will be best viewed at 2:07pm, but will continue until 3:21 PM. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of safety precautions when observing a solar eclipse. Looking directly at the sun without adequate eye protection can cause serious eye damage. Therefore, we will provide approved solar eclipse viewers for everyone participating in the viewing session. These viewers are specifically designed to filter out harmful radiation and allow safe observation of the eclipse. With the eclipse continuing after school hours, we kindly ask that parents and guardians support our efforts to ensure the safety of our students by communicating and reinforcing the following guidelines:

  • Do not look directly at the sun without approved solar eclipse viewers.
  • Encourage your child to use the provided viewers during the eclipse viewing session.
  • Remind your child of the potential dangers of staring at the sun without protection.

Due to a change in now being able to provide viewing glasses for all students and staff, we plan to have all students participate unless indicated by their parents or guardians. You may opt your student out of this experience by completing this short google form by Thursday, April 4th.

Eclipse Opt out Form.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in making this educational experience both enriching and safe for our students.

Sincerely,

Scott Loughrige
