Volunteer of the Month: January

Reported by on 1/20/22

Shelby Schultz has been an amazing volunteer at Waubonsie Valley High School, and throughout the district, for the past several years. Because she is a tireless advocate for students and a dedicated volunteer, she is being named the BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month.

Shelby has three children. Her son graduated from Waubonsie Valley High School in 2021 and her daughters are currently a junior at Waubonsie and an eighth grader at Scullen Middle School. Shelby has been volunteering in the district for more than ten years. What initially started as a few hours volunteering in her son’s classroom, while her daughter was in preschool, has turned into an extensive list of volunteer activities that makes Shelby a popular face around Waubonsie Valley High School, Scullen Middle School, and even the district office.

Shelby’s volunteerism includes being the Waubonsie PTA Co-President, IPPC representative, Warrior Wearhouse Director, and Indian Prairie Boundary Committee member. Additionally, Shelby has regularly orchestrated efforts to assist families and students when staff reaches out with a need or even if she simply sees a need on her own. Recently, she organized a snack drive at Waubonsie to help support the nurse’s office. She also manages several social media accounts to help the Warrior community stay informed with what is happening at Waubonsie. Her list of volunteer activities also extends to both Scullen Middle School and Fry Elementary School for the past several years.

Assistant Principal Jason Schmidtgall, who nominated Shelby for the award, states, “Shelby is a tireless advocate for the experience children get in District 204 schools. She is a confident and competent individual who we trust greatly with our efforts and she is certainly one of the first people we reach out to when we need help.”

Shelby volunteers because she likes being involved in her kids’ school and their school experiences. While she is appreciative of this honor, she feels every volunteer in the schools is deserving of this recognition regardless of how many hours they are able to devote. She says it’s only as a group of individuals coming together for a collective good that we’re able to make a positive impact in each of our schools.
